It is now 2018 and unfortunately Martin Luther Kings words resonate now more than they ever did in the last twenty years of ‘progress’. Because of King and the many men and women who fought with him we have overcome hate, exclusion and segregation. In the last forty years we have reached levels of prosperity only dreamed of in the sixties . America tried to create a narrative for us that we have resolutely rejected. Because of King we saw past their interpretations and because of our slave ancestors we saw our strength.
It is now 2018 and we are seeing America try again to enslave us, incarcerate and kill us and keep us quiet and docile. In 2018, after eight years of the dream of President Barrack Obama, we are again seeing a new low in American society. This new administration has one goal, it is to take us back to Jim Crow. America is again testing our resilience as it tries to implement a level of systematic hypocrisy, racism, segregation and income inequality that our leaders of the Civil Rights Movement of the sixties so vehemently fought and gave their lives for in resistance. We will not accept this trip back to the past just as our leaders did not accept this bigotry in their present.
We will never be silent. We will never accept their narrative. We are our past, our present and our future and each of us hold MLK in our souls in one variation of another so on this day lets recognize our collective strength, perseverance, and struggle ahead of us.
