And welcome to another post! Our mission at Mixx in Providence has always been to bring high quality natural hair products to our customers. For the past few months we have been working on re-branding and will be upgrading to Mixx Naturals and a new online store. We have been busy collaborating with other women who are also seeking a more mindful natural lifestyle. Our first collaborator is with Jen whom we first noticed on Instagram during Black History Month where she captured yoga poses and dedicated them to African-American women in our history. We reached out and asked (begged slightly) for her to incorporate her post on to our blog. We learned a lot about yoga and history. I am sure you will to. Please welcome her and be sure to follow with your email so we can keep you all updated on the great changes coming!

Hello world!!! My name is Jen and I am a lover of all things that make me look and feel GREAT! This in part is why I began to practice yoga. I am not a certified yoga teacher, just a lover of the art. I have been practicing yoga on and off since the summer of 2014. About 6 months ago, once I realized how centered my practice made me feel and how much it helped with my anxiety, I re-dedicated myself to my practice on a more consistent basis. Yoga isn’t just the photos of poses you see or how flexible one is, but it’s a lifestyle and can be life altering if you give it a chance!
For this year’s Black History Month, I dedicated a yoga pose a day to Black women who are part of history that we never hear about on my Instagram page because it was important to me that we celebrated them as well. But here we understand that Black history should be celebrated EVERYDAY and decided to continue the celebration. While celebrating, we also want to inspire you to give yoga a shot if you haven’t already! I say this because Yoga has been gentrified and commercially exploited like nobody’s business and it can be discouraging for people of color. You don’t need any experience or flexibility to start, if you have a body and are breathing you can do yoga honey! You don’t have to attend your local yoga studio to get started. Check YouTube, your social media outlets, or read a few books & online articles, grab a mat or blanket and whatever props you think you may need and start!
But first, let me learn you somethings!
Fannie Lou Hamer was a civil rights activist who fought for the right to vote, encouraging and recruiting people in her native Mississippi and all throughout the South. At one point, her activism got her arrested and thrown in Montgomery County Jail, where she and her comrades were viciously beaten. She continued, helping to create the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, which brought forth national attention to the deep discrimination in the South. At the 1964 Democratic convention, she spoke of her experiences in Mississippi and told leaders about themselves for ignoring the way black people were murdered for trying to exercise their rights. She was “sick and tired of being sick and tired”! President LBJ, who wasn’t too happy with what Sister Hamer had to say, called a last-minute press conference in attempts to distract the masses (side-eyes). His planned backfired, her speech was aired and MFDP received a lot of support! Go head girl and thank you!
The pose chosen for this post is the mermaid pose (Eka Pada Rajakapotasan):
Some of the benefits of mermaid pose: Stretches deep glutes, gets rid of lower back pain, stimulates internal organs, releases any negative feelings and unwanted feelings that is stored in our system
So you all soon!
*Please use caution if you decide to attempt this pose. If you have any current or past injuries, consider consulting with your doctor before hand. Be sure to warm up before getting into the pose to avoid any possible injury. Utilizing props and the variation of a pose is OKAY! Listen to your body, DO NOT force yourself any further than your body will allow. Yoga requires a lot of patience, don’t feel bad if you don’t look like what you see in photos. Your journey is yours and yours only, don’t compare it to anyone else. Enjoy the ride but most importantly HAVE FUN!!
